Style guide

I use the Chicago Manual of Style, which is the preferred style guide used in the book publishing industry. If you have specific style preferences in mind, I’ll work with you to create a style guide that suits your needs.

Rates

Rates differ based on the length of your manuscript and the level of editing needed. I offer competitive pricing that is based on a sliding scale from $40–$50 per hour, with a $40 minimum fee for any service.

Developmental edit

I’ll read over your manuscript for big picture issues like character development, plot, theme, and readability.

Here’s what my process looks like:

  1. I’ll write comments in your manuscript and write you an editorial letter. The letter celebrates what you did well and what needs work. I’ll identify, explain, and suggest changes.
  2. You’ll read over my suggestions, implement any changes you see fit, and send me your revised manuscript.
  3. I’ll give you feedback on your revised manuscript.
  4. I’m always available for any questions/clarifications you need based on my feedback or suggestions.

Picture book pricing starts at $150 for up to 500 words.

Copyedit

I’ll check your manuscript for language usage, grammar, and punctuation. The goal is to make sure your writing is clear and readable for your intended audience. Additionally, I’ll ensure that any illustrations match the text and are factually and visually correct. This step happens before you typeset/format your book.

Pricing starts at $45.

Proofread

This step happens after you’ve typeset/formatted your book. It is the last step before publication. I’ll do a final check for typos, grammar, punctation, and formatting.

Sensitivity read

Also called a diversity read or an authenticity read, l’ll read over your manuscript for any issues concerning stereotyping, word usage, character arcs, and depiction of marginalized characters, add comments to your manuscript to address word- and sentence-level concerns, then write a full sensitivity reader report to address concerns at the story level. My focus is on Hispanic and Latinx representation.

A sensitivity read is included in any service you purchase above.
